StoryPlace at Te Papa

The Tiny Human and I haven’t been to many kids things on around the city, partly because we are late sleepers, mostly because being around a bunch of kids & possibly being subjected to that music isn’t my idea of fun.

However this morning we were invited by a good friend to check out StoryPlace at Te Papa. None of us had ever been to StoryPlace, but my friend had heard good things about it, so it was an adventure to have together.

StoryPlace is a magicial place of discovery & imagination situated on level 2 of Te Papa. There are three sessions each day (10.30am, 11.30am & 1.30pm) that run for 45minutes.

I didn’t know what to expect, but it’s super affordable so worth checking out. The programme at the moment is “We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday“.

The doors opened & in we all filed, putting our shoes in the cubby area before taking a seat on the cushions. The room was a small low lit curtained off area, cozy but nice.

595238-282164-14We started our session with a story aided birds & insects of an NZ forest (finger puppets) and a tickle filled song. We then went to the beach and had some interactive fun and singing with an octopus, a dolphin & a stingray. All of the kids (a group of about 10) were enjoying themselves and the host did a great job engaging with all of the children present.
After our song with the sea creatures our host invited us to the other area to explore. She stood & drew the curtain to a gasp of surprise and amazement. There was a bridge across a stream, that led to a slide in a tree that was filled with native birds, you could row a boat, explore rock pools, tend to a garden and so much more, you just have to believe.

The Tiny Human had a good play around and with how hard it was to get him to settle down for the final story & put his boots on to leave, I’m pretty sure he had a great time.

So if you are in Wellington or if you’re visiting from out of town and looking for something to do with the little ones, head on into Te Papa and check out StoryPlace. It is well worth it and is going on our frequent visit list.
